HISTORY

Lionel was born in Paris to a Korean and a Korean-Chinese immigrants (his father and mother, respectively) that met in the same city. Being both witches, it was inevitable that Lionel would be one too. Growing up, while he certainly did ordinary things everyone his age did, such as going to school (with the added Korean weekend school attendance making him stand out from most of his peers, admittedly) and playing with his friends, but witchcraft was also always present. As his family had a history of potion making and earth elemental magic, Lionel's magical education was too centered in these areas, always with the expectation that he would take over the apothecary his parents had opened before he was born.

However, he had other ideas, at least for a while. Cooking had always been something he had taken great pleasure in, something that carried over for a fondness for potion making. Because of this, he always entertained a wish of becoming a chef, one he started pursuing when, fresh out of high school, he went to culinary school, with his parent's more or less reluctant approval. As he studied, though, he came to the conclusion that professional cooking wasn't for him after all. Food, he realized, was something he loved more at a personal level, as something to share with those he cared for, to do for pleasure. A rapid, stressful environment like a restaurant kitchen was not where he cooked at his best, or even enjoyed it much, and so, once he graduated, his future plans began looking more into the family business.

... But first, there was something else to take care of. Being the child of a male Korean citizen, Lionel had double nationality for both France and South Korea. As such, being a male citizen of South Korea, by all legal means he was supposed to go to Korea to fulfill his duty of the mandatory two years of military service. While it wasn't unusual for men in his situation to use their double nationality to avoid doing it all together, mostly by simply never stepping foot on Korean soil again until they were too old to be eligible, Lionel didn't want to do that, nor would his family allow it without making themselves heard. So, at the age of 21, fresh out of culinary school, he boarded a plane to Seoul to enlist.

It was in the army that he met Jung Min-ho. The two men were in the same unit from the beginning, as being a nation with the specter of war looming in the background at almost all times, finding ways to integrate witches and their skills into the army was an obvious first step. Being both witches, Lionel and Min-ho were in each other's personal and military lives throughout the two years they spent in the army. It soon became obvious that the men felt a strong mutual attraction, but the army was far from the best place for anything to happen between the two, so their relationship never went beyond a close friendship. As their service ended, Lionel returned to France, but the two kept contact. From his part, Lionel began working on the apothecary and further honing his craft has a potion maker, preparing himself to take over the store.

And then, several years later, when Lionel was 28, Min-ho appeared in Paris at Lionel's doorstep. The man had apparently decided that enough was enough, and after years of stalling, he wanted to know just how did Lionel feel about him, exactly, and just what could they possibly build together.

Two years later, when Lionel was 30, they got married. And Lionel was... Happy. He wanted nothing. Having taken over the apothecary the year before, Lionel and Min Ho, now going by Michel for the convenience of customers and non-Korean peers, ran the place on their own. A year later, they adopted their daughter, Lena. Lena is the daughter of Lionel's cousin and a young woman said cousin met while on a vacation trip to Paris to visit Lionel. A careless summer fling, refusal from the cousin to have anything to do with his child, the mother being unable to care for a child on her own and Lionel and Min-ho being looking into adopting a child made the whole process relatively easy and painless.

Three months after Lena's adoption, Min Ho died. A late delivery for a customer, a phone call distracting him, a drunk driver... He was pronounced dead on the scene. Lionel was, of course devastated. Life had gotten better and better for him for years, and suddenly, it was swept from beneath him like a rug. Making his emotional state worse, Min Ho's parents requested that he buried in Korea, meaning Lionel wouldn't be able to visit his grave easily. And so he grieved, his life standing to a halt. But he was able to slowly pick himself back up, for the sake of Lena and the life he still had to return to. He knew Min Ho wouldn't want anything else, after all.

And now, two years later, he's mostly back to his old self, and hoping he's capable of moving and build a new life for himself a Lena.
